Recent research in metabolism implicates fructose as a more dangerous culprit in metabolic diseases than other forms of sugar.

To catch up on the latest findings in ongoing research, we talked with Richard J. Johnson, MD, chief of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Johnson published two books on these topics, “The Sugar Fix” and “The Fat Switch.”

In this video, Johnson provides an update about the role of fructose in obesity and diabetes, and discusses new hints about how uric acid may act as an accomplice in chronic diseases like hypertension and metabolic dysfunctions. Johnson says his team is working on a new blood test that could help determine how people metabolize sugar.
