Structured Physical Activity to Prevent Major Mobility Disability in the Elderly

Research · May 27, 2014

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

  • The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) multicenter trial randomized 1635 sedentary men and women aged 70 to 89 years who had physical limitations to either participate in a structured, moderate-intensity physical activity program or a health education course. The primary outcome of incident major mobility disability occurred in 30% of the activity group compared with 35% of the education group (P = .03). Serious adverse events occurred in 50% of the activity group compared with 46% of the education group.
  • Over the 2.6-year study period, a moderate physical activity program showed a mobility benefit in older adults.
