NEW BRUNSWICK – A Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School doctor has been charged with photographing more than two dozen women in the bathroom at the city hospital.

Dr. James Goydos, 58, a professor of surgery in the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at Rutgers RWJ Medical School, was charged in a 160-count indictment with invasion of privacy, computer theft, wiretapping, burglary, official misconduct and impersonation.

Goydos was previously arrested March 30, 2018 at his East Brunswick home after police allegedly found an assault firearm in his basement.

On Wednesday, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced the indictment, issued in December 2018, noting the crimes spanned over a two-year period.

The victims were photographed or filmed at a bathroom at Goydos’ workplace and not in his capacity as a physician, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“Dr. Goydos is not employed at the University,” the school said in a statement. “When the university discovered Dr. Goydos’ activities we immediately referred the matter to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and cooperated fully with their investigation leading to the recent indictments. Dr. Goydos was initially banned from the University and subsequently resigned.

Most of Goydos’ charges include invasion of privacy counts, more than 100 in the third and fourth degree.

The indictment describes the victims as “Jane Does,” indicating Goydos allegedly photographed or videotaped women in various stages of undress.

The third-degree charges result from Goydos allegedly photographing or videotaping victims, without their consent or knowledge, while their “intimate parts” were exposed. The fourth-degree charges resulted from similar instances, except the victims were wearing underwear.

Goydos faces multiple counts of third-degree burglary for allegedly unlawfully entering the offices of several coworkers.

He also faces multiple counts of third-degree and second-degree computer theft charges for allegedly obtaining copies or using copies of personal information of several victims.

Goydos’ second-degree official misconduct charges stem from his employment as a public servant at Rutgers and allegedly using his position to commit unlawful and unauthorized acts.

His multiple fourth-degree impersonation charges stem from his alleged use of victims’ personal information for purposes of fraud.

Goydos was also charged with a count of third-degree hindering apprehension for allegedly giving false information to a law enforcement officer to hinder his arrest.

Goydos also faces three weapons charges for allegedly possessing an assault rifle at his East Brunswick home and two illegal slingshots.

At the time of the alleged crimes, Goydos was employed as the director of Melanoma and Soft Tissue Oncology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and a professor of surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Goydos is scheduled to appear before Judge Benjamin Bucca in New Brunswick Superior Court on March 18.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Rutgers Police Detective Sgt. Carlos Rodriguez at 848-932-8025 or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Paul Kelley at 732-745-4499.
